Another Meaning to Pigging Out

October 3, 2012

I’m not sure why I was compelled to write about this, but I guess it’s one of those “truth is stranger than fiction” moments that seems somewhat worthy of a mention.

According to the BBC, an Oregon farmer was eaten by his pigs. Yeah, you may want to click on over to the story just to make sure. I mean, it sounds somewhat silly, no?

It’s been well over a decade since I stopped eating meat, and I try to maintain a fairly vegan diet, although I wouldn’t really consider myself militant about it. I don’t try to presume that this is a lifestyle choice that everyone should make, but it is something that has made sense to me.

And no, it hasn’t really been about being healthier, or anything of that sort. Many years ago, I found out about all the horrific things that happen because of the meat industry in the United States, and not only to the animals, but also to the people that work at such places. I read reports that were alarming, quite frankly, and it sort of made me lose my appetite for the latest cheeseburger craving. Eventually I gave up dairy as well, considering that most of the meat and dairy industry is just about the same.

Now I know there are alternatives out there, and there’s been such a focus put on organic and “free-range” and all that, in addition to kosher meats and the like. But it always made sense to me just to steer clear of it. I never thought that my stance was for the sense of making a difference per se, but rather a conscious effort to live in accordance to my own set of warped and contradicted principles.

Over the years, it’s been much easier to eat vegan foods, as they are more readily available than they were over a decade ago, and since I like to cook (on occasion), I often have something delicious to eat.

Who knows what got into those man-eating pigs. I had heard of pigs being filthy animals (thanks Pulp Fiction), but this is borderline absurd.

The farmer’s dentures were found in the pig pen, along with other remains. No one has any idea if he collapsed before he was eaten, or if the maddened pigs attacked him before devouring his corpse.

This isn’t enough for me to take revenge and go back to my meat-eating ways, but I guess it brings me some small comfort to know that those pigs have it coming to them.

Would you like some man-eating pepperoni on your pizza?
