The Flaming Lips to Release a Drug-Inspired, Terrifying LP on April 16th

March 7, 2013

Their latest record, The Terror (available for preorder now), is described by frontman Wayne Coyne as “bleak” and “disturbing.”  From what I’ve heard so far, it appears to carry the DNA of the grim psychedelic aesthetic in 2009’s Embryonicmost assuredly a good thing.  What follows is the walloping, 12-minute track, “You Lust,” if only to whet your palate.

The name that we’re using so far is a little bit misleading […] There’s a specific mindset that we’re talking about when we talk about The Terror.  Exploring the terror of curiosity, the terror of living, the terror of love. All of these things that are a in certain state of mind, you have to embrace them, knowing that there is also the more intense the joy is, the more intense the pain is [ … ] I would think it’s the first really drug record for us, because it’s me on the drugs instead of Steven [Drozd].

Drozd is Coyne’s secret weapon, the primary composer in the band.  According to Bradley Beesley’s 2005 documentary, Fearless Freaks, Drozd struggled with heroin addiction for five years.  Following a physical altercation between the two confreres (where Coyne violently confronted Drozd after feeling overcome with his best friend’s possible demise), Drozd sought rehab in 2002.  The following is an excerpted scene from Beesley’s doc, where Drozd openly discussed his addiction:

Art untempered consumes the mind; art unchecked consumes the body.  Let’s just hope this record doesn’t find Coyne in a precarious place.

Don’t miss The Terror‘s bonus track, “Sun Blows Up Today,” a deluxe-album incentive for Lips enthusiasts.  Let’s be sure to ignore the fact that it was featured in Hyundai’s Superbowl commercial on February 3rd (grody):
