Track Awareness: "Walking on a Dream" by Empire of the Sun

February 2, 2012

This video is beyond ridiculous — and so are thespians Luke Steele and Nick Littlemore — but I can’t help but bop my head to this neo yacht rock single and put it on repeat!  Admittedly, I had to Shazam it from the movie Cyrus to find out what it was.

As far as the rest of the titular album, consider what Mike Orme of Pitchfork had to say of it in 2008:

No wonder people buy individual tracks rather than full albums these days– few buzzes die so abruptly as in the transition of the complex, ethereal melodies of “We Are the People” into the following cut “Delta Bay”, which sounds like “Thriller” sung by cats.

Still, I am rather enjoying “Half Mast” and “Tiger By My Side” (and if the latter songtitle doesn’t amuse you, then I don’t know what will).

They may have not released an album since 2008, but their touring activities haven’t been inert.  Here are their tour dates for 2012 (taken from their website):

From their touring webpage:

Front-man and vocalist Emperor Steele says “The show is going to be epic, full of colours, dinosaur-teeth chomping at the valleys of future. It will be more outrageous than the scents of imagination and will take the audience on a journey to another world.”

Lord Littlemore, who does not perform in the live show, says “We created the music as a celebration, this is an exciting new chapter in the Empire journey”.

Curious as to what “Emperor Steele” and “Lord Littlemore” mean by “epic,” “celebration,” and “journey”?  Check out the following YouTube vid for a taste of their live performance:
